Any travelers out there heading to England sometime soon might want to check out more than just London. The country is full of little towns and boroughs that will really give you a sense of English life that’s off the beaten path and out of the big city life. The town of Halifax is located in West Yorkshire and has a very long history dating back to at least 1091. The name comes from the old English for “halh-gefeaxe” meaning “area of coarse grass in a nook of land.”
Later on, the town’s wealth came from cotton, wool and carpet industries. In fact, there are still many mills in the area that were used to process textiles. Halifax is about 110 kilometers (65 miles) from Liverpool and is accessible by train and bus. There are plenty of things to do in this West Yorkshire town and plenty more places to stay while you visit. Here is a list of some of the best spots from cozy cabins to historic hotels.
Plenty of mills in the area have been converted for other uses. Some have been converted to businesses or offices and some have been converted to apartments like this one! Stay in a 19th-century mill converted into an apartment, located away from the hustle and bustle but still close to the center of town, where you can find some restaurants and entertainment. What’s cool about this place is that there are still many original features in the place, such as pine beams and the wheel used for lifting wool.

Admittedly, this location is not centrally located in Halifax proper but it is not too far away. The great thing about this location is that it offers seclusion and great views of the countryside and rural views. This is a great spot for anyone who wants to get away from the busyness of the city life and enjoy the calmness and serenity of rural English life. The private garden overlooks views of the valley but still offers the must-have amenities of modern life like TV and WiFi access.

The Holdsworth House hotel is a historic site and a famous one! Used in the BBC film “Last Tango in Halifax,” the Holdsworth House is surrounded by lush gardens and hidden terraces. Locally grown produce onsite is used in the hotel’s critically acclaimed restaurant. When guests arrive they can expect a complimentary drink and during their stay, they can expect an extensive bar and cocktail menu as well as a la carte dining. Halifax town center is a five-minute drive away and Leeds is about a 25-minute drive.
Another historic building, this cottage house is not centrally located in Halifax so it is another place to go to if you’re looking for a secluded spot away from the city. This is a beautiful Yorkshire stone house surrounded by a garden and offering great views of the Wharfe Valley.

Another historical location on the list is the Imperial Crown Hotel. Originally built as a Coach Inn during the 1800s, the Imperial Crown is now a hotel for anyone, not just those with horses! Its central location is right near the rail station and near the Eureka! Children’s Museum making it a nice spot for travelers with kids.
The hotel offers a 24-hour bar service for adults! The Wallis Simpson Bar offers breakfast in the mornings and is located near many places of interest like the Victoria Theater and Square Chapel. The Imperial Crown is only a 45-minute ride from Leeds Bradford International Airport.
The White Swan Hotel is located centrally in Halifax and is only a ten-minute walk to the railway station. Because of its central location, many places of local interest are nearby, including tourist spots and local shops and restaurants. There is an onsite fitness suite and the rooms are described as “bright and airy.” There is also an onsite restaurant so guests can enjoy a full English breakfast each morning as well as fresh pasta and pizza throughout the day.
Chances are you won’t be renting this place out if you’re traveling alone or looking for something cozy and romantic. This place is mostly for people looking to party with their friends for a weekend. The “hen party” house is a luxury rental with a 9-meter (30-foot) indoor pool and hot tub. So even in the dead of winter you can still go and live it up.
The space is not only reserved for “hen parties” (bachelorette parties for non-Brits out there) but will also rent out to families looking for a weekend getaway during the summer months. Centrally located, the Hen House is easily accessible from London, Manchester, Liverpool, and Scotland and only 20 minutes by cab from Leeds. Shops are located close by and the house comes with a TV fully equipped with all things entertainment.
